The best Tinto Brass movies of all time, ranked
1. Caligula (1979)
The most famous entry in the Tinto Brass filmography, and the most troubled. Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, and Peter O’Toole star in this sweeping historical drama about the Roman Emperor’s descent into madness. The budget was enormous for its time. The ambition matched it.
Brass was locked out of the editing room by producer Bob Guccione and disowned the final cut. He’s never stopped talking about it. Despite all that, Caligula is the highest-grossing Italian film ever released in the United States, and no other film gets anywhere near its portrayal of Rome’s excess and danger.
Runtime: 156 minutes
Cast: Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O’Toole
Genre: Historical Drama / Erotic
2. Salon Kitty (1976)
The film that put Brass on the international map. Set in Nazi Berlin, an SS commandant wiretaps an elite brothel and fills it with trained spies. Brass took what was a low-budget exploitation script and made a dark, stylized political satire out of it. Helmut Berger and Ingrid Thulin are both very good.
The production design is lavish for a European co-production of the era. Brass always called it a serious anti-fascist film, and the evidence is on screen.
Runtime: 129 minutes
Cast: Helmut Berger, Ingrid Thulin, Teresa Ann Savoy
Genre: Erotic War Drama
3. The Key (La Chiave) (1983)
The most artistically serious film in Brass’s erotic period. Set in 1940s Venice during Mussolini’s rise, a married couple each keep a secret diary to record their deepest desires. Adapted from a novel by Japanese author Junichiro Tanizaki. Frank Finlay and Stefania Sandrelli are both outstanding.
The Venetian atmosphere gives it a weight his lighter comedies don’t carry. If you want to see Brass as a genuinely serious filmmaker, start here.
Runtime: 110 minutes
Cast: Frank Finlay, Stefania Sandrelli, Franco Branciaroli
Genre: Erotic Drama / Romance
4. Paprika (1991)
A young country girl arrives in the city and works in a brothel to help her fiancé save enough money for a business. Debora Caprioglio is the main reason to watch this. She brings real warmth and charm to what could easily have been a flat role.
The film balances comedy and drama cleanly. Caprioglio’s screen presence carries it from the first scene to the last.
Runtime: 95 minutes
Cast: Debora Caprioglio, Stéphane Ferrara, Martine Brochard
Genre: Erotic Comedy / Drama
5. Frivolous Lola / Monella (1998)
Set in 1950s rural Italy. Young Lola has strong views on premarital sex that clash directly with her cautious fiancé’s. Anna Ammirati is luminous. The cinematography is warm and sun-soaked throughout. Brass described this as one of his personal favorites, and that affection is visible in every scene.
Playful, beautifully shot, and one of the most loyal cult followings in his catalog. It earns it.

6. All Ladies Do It (Così fan tutte) (1992)
Claudia Koll plays Diana, who explores adultery while convincing herself it’ll save her marriage. The premise sounds provocative. Brass plays it with lightness and humor. Some of his most elegant European location photography is in here.
A good entry point if you’re new to his work. The tone stays witty, the pacing is brisk, and Koll is very watchable.

7. Miranda (1985)
Miranda runs a small country tavern and searches for the ideal husband. Serena Grandi brings enormous charisma to the role. The rural Italian setting gives the film a breezy, holiday feel. It’s closer to classic Italian comedy than to anything darker, and Brass brings his signature celebration of female confidence without apology.
Great fun. Rewatchable.
Runtime: 90 minutes
Cast: Serena Grandi, Andrea Occhipinti, Franco Interlenghi
Genre: Erotic Comedy
8. Trasgredire (2000)
Carla, played by Yuliya Mayarchuk, scouts London apartments for her Venetian boyfriend and ends up in an adventurous friendship with a free-spirited real estate agent named Moira. Shot against a Thames-side backdrop with the bright, saturated look of Brass’s late-period work. The jazz-influenced soundtrack keeps the energy up throughout.
One of the most consistently popular films on Film1k. Brass was in his late 60s when he made this. The craft is still fully there.
Runtime: 91 minutes
Cast: Yuliya Mayarchuk, Jarno Berardi, Francesca Nunzi
Genre: Erotic Comedy / Drama
9. The Voyeur (Il Voyeur) (1994)
A corrupt lawyer becomes obsessed with a charismatic mob boss while his girlfriend recovers from surgery. Giancarlo Giannini is compelling as the increasingly fixated protagonist. The darkly comic tone sets it apart from Brass’s lighter romantic comedies.
It sits between the heavier drama of The Key and the breezy films that followed. Good for understanding the full range of his career.
Runtime: 97 minutes
Cast: Giancarlo Giannini, Philippe Léotard, François Négret
Genre: Erotic Drama / Dark Comedy
10. Senso ’45 (Black Angel) (2002)
Brass’s final major theatrical release. Nazi-occupied Venice, the last days of World War II, a fascist officer’s wife in a dangerous affair with an SS officer. Anna Galena and Gabriel Garko give the most emotionally intense performances in his filmography. The wartime atmosphere gives the story real weight.
His most mature film. A fitting end to an extraordinary career. Read more about Senso ’45 on Wikipedia.
Runtime: 98 minutes
Cast: Anna Galena, Gabriel Garko, Franco Branciaroli
Genre: Erotic Drama / War / Romance
