Plot: During the production, director Adrian Lyne employed emotionally manipulative tactics on Kim Basinger to obtain the performance he desired from the relatively unknown actress, which Basinger later sharply criticized. Lyne, for example, did not allow Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger to speak to one other on set. The two were kept apart, and Lyne would spread reports about how Rourke planned to make her like or detest him so she would carry that attitude into the scene. Lyne would also give Rourke performance notes but not Basinger's in order to frighten her. Lyne shot the film sequentially, which was an extremely unusual and costly decision along these lines, so that Basinger's true emotional breakdown over time would be accurately transmitted to the screen.
