Plot: Bellochio's key contribution was to take the subject (military service in Italy, but prior to most European forces becoming professional, it had an international flavor) seriously.Coarse comedy was prevalent in both Italy and France: France had the Charlots and their gloomy Bidasses (=squaddies) farces, while Italy had Edwige Fenech cast as a doctor in the barracks.
Everything concerning the barracks atmosphere, the foolish instructions, the mind-destroying drill, and the humiliations has been successful.Patrick Dewaere portrays a blasé, cynical officer.
On the other side, everything about officer Franco Nero's private life with wife Miou-Miou, whom he treats like trash, is less compelling, resembling a poor man's "Reflection in a Golden Eye".
